Dozens of World War II German warships have resurfaced in the Danube River near the Serbian town of Prahovo as water levels drop to historic lows. The vessels were part of Nazi Germany's Black Sea fleet and were deliberately scuttled in September 1944 to block the channel and slow the Soviet advance. Historians state that up to 200 warships were sunk in the Danube gorge during this period.

The emerging wrecks, some of which are still laden with weapons and explosives, are located near the border between Serbia and Romania. While some ships were removed by Communist Yugoslav authorities in the past, many remain because of the danger posed by their cargo. The Serbian government has sought European Union financial support to address the wrecks.
