New Forest Fire Prompts Confinements in Madrid's Sierra Oeste

A new forest fire broke out Wednesday afternoon near kilometer 52 of the M-510 road in Aldea del Fresno, Madrid. The blaze has forced the confinement of residents in both Aldea del Fresno and Villamantilla. Authorities have activated Operational Situation 2 of the INFOMA plan, a status indicating that the fire poses a direct threat to the population or non-forest assets and requires extraordinary resources for extinction.

The emergency response includes 20 ground units and five aerial assets from the Community of Madrid's forest firefighters and agents. The Military Emergencies Unit (UME) has also deployed units from its base in Torrejón de Ardoz to assist in the efforts. Strong gusts of wind have been reported as a factor accelerating the fire's intensity and advance.

Transport has been affected by the blaze. The M-510 road is closed between kilometers 50 and 54, and the regional bus line 548 has been suspended. The government delegate, Francisco Martín, and local authorities have urged residents to exercise extreme caution and follow all emergency service instructions.

This event occurs shortly after a massive fire in July that affected approximately 27,000 hectares and forced the evacuation or confinement of 55,000 people. While the current fire is in the same general area, emergency services have stated that it is not related to the July fires.
