Nine Dead in Thailand's Worst Mass Shooting Since 2022

Nine people were killed and 23 others wounded in a mass shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School on the outskirts of Bangkok on Friday, August 7. The attack was carried out by a 14 year old student who allegedly shot his grandparents at home before traveling 18 kilometers to the school. At the school, the teenager killed three teachers and two school officials before committing suicide. Police reported that the shooter used at least 26 bullets and had a knife in his bag.

Investigations revealed that the shooter had watched violent content on social media to learn how to use firearms and had shown interest in guns for one to two years. A teacher had previously confiscated a BB gun from the boy last year. The boy's mother described him as a bright and cheerful person who denied being bullied. She noted that he had lived with his grandparents for 12 years following her separation from his father.

Students recounted the terror of the 40 minute attack. One 14 year old student, identified as Khim, described how her class barricaded their door with desks and turned off the lights. Her mother, a nurse, remained on the phone with her elder daughter in a neighboring building, providing real time updates to emergency services about the shooter's location on the second floor. All members of the family survived the ordeal.

In response to the tragedy, the Ministry of Education promised to develop new safety protocols within three months. These measures include mental health screenings, emergency response drills, and efforts to prevent weapons from entering schools. The event has reignited a national debate over firearms control in Thailand, which is the largest gun owning nation in Southeast Asia.
