Nine people died on Monday, August 10, 2026, in Madhya Pradesh's Rajgarh district after a van they were traveling in was swept away by a swollen drain. The victims, who were residents of Dewas district, were traveling to a religious shrine in Kadlawad. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. near a bypass in Padana village under Sarangpur tehsil.
There were 11 passengers in the vehicle. Two people were rescued safely, including the driver, Mukesh Parmar. According to officials, the van attempted to cross a bridge over the Jhiri drain while water was flowing over the road. Local residents and officials stated that the driver was warned against attempting the crossing but proceeded regardless. Rescue efforts involved the State Disaster Emergency Response Force, the Home Guard, and local residents who used ropes and cranes to recover the vehicle and the bodies. The administration announced financial aid of 4 lakh rupees to the next of kin of each deceased person. Police are conducting a preliminary investigation to determine if legal action for negligence is warranted against the driver.
