The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced on Thursday that the current El Niño is already at a strong level and is expected to continue intensifying. There is a 93 percent chance that the phenomenon will evolve into a very strong category, often called a super El Niño, starting in September. NOAA estimates there is a nearly 70 percent chance that this event will be the strongest on record since records began in 1950. The agency expects the phenomenon to last at least until April of next year.

El Niño occurs when surface waters in the equatorial Pacific Ocean become warmer than average. Current measurements in the Niño 3.4 region show temperatures 1.4 degrees Celsius above average. Some subsurface areas are as much as 10 degrees Celsius warmer than normal, which may help maintain high surface temperatures for a longer period. NOAA forecasters anticipate that sea surface temperature anomalies could exceed 2.5 degrees Celsius.

While a stronger classification increases the likelihood of characteristic impacts, NOAA cautioned that it does not necessarily mean consequences will be more severe. Potential effects include droughts in Indonesia and Australia, as well as unusually wet conditions across the southern United States from California to Florida. In Brazil, the phenomenon tends to cause drought in the North, Northeast, Center West, and parts of the Southeast, while bringing more rain to the South. The Brazilian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has released over 300 million reais to combat potential forest fires resulting from heat and dry weather.

Experts note that this event is occurring against a background of human caused climate change. This broader warming trend can amplify the impacts of El Niño, potentially increasing the severity of heat waves and other disasters. Because of this combination, it is considered virtually certain that 2027 will be the hottest year on record.
