Norway's King Harald Hospitalized as Health Condition Deteriorates

The royal household announced on Sunday that the health of King Harald of Norway, 89, deteriorated over the weekend while he was in the hospital. The King is currently being treated at Oslo University Hospital for a bacterial infection in his blood and is receiving antibiotics. According to the palace, he has responded well to the treatment and his condition is stable. The King was originally admitted on Monday due to fluid retention related to cortisone treatment for haemolytic anaemia, a condition that causes the rapid destruction of red blood cells. He has been placed on sick leave and has canceled a planned visit to the Trondelag region on September 1 and 2. Crown Prince Haakon is acting as regent in his father's absence.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, speaking from Kyiv, stated that he has been updated on the King's condition and expressed his wish for the monarch to continue receiving quality care. Storting President Masud Gharahkhani also issued a statement sending warm thoughts to the King and the royal family. Medical experts noted that a systemic blood infection is serious by definition, particularly for elderly patients using immune suppressing medications like cortisone.
