The Novo party officialized former Minas Gerais governor Romeu Zema as its candidate for the Presidency on Monday, July 27, during a convention in Brasília. While Zema's candidacy was confirmed by acclamation, the party has not yet defined a running mate for the ticket.
Zema mentioned that he had spoken with former Supreme Court minister Joaquim Barbosa regarding the vice presidency. One report notes that the party also considered businessman Geraldo Rufino, but Rufino is affiliated with Podemos and intends to run for the Senate in São Paulo.
During the event, Novo president Eduardo Ribeiro stated that a competent management style could "bury the PT" across Brazil, as he claims occurred in Minas Gerais. He added that the party will field approximately 150 candidates nationwide, primarily for the Chamber of Deputies and legislative assemblies.
Zema is a businessman with an administration degree from Fundação Getulio Vargas who previously won gubernatorial elections in 2018 and 2022. However, recent Datafolha polling places him at 3 percent in voting intentions, compared to 4 percent for Ronaldo Caiado and 32 percent for Flávio Bolsonaro. This election is also the first national contest where Novo will utilize public electoral funds.
