A woman was killed and another person was wounded in a random stabbing attack in New York City's Times Square on Monday afternoon. The attacker was subsequently shot and killed by New York Police Department officers. The incident occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Seventh Avenue, near One Times Square, in an area heavily frequented by tourists.
According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the assailant, identified as 49 year old Pamela Cisneros of Queens, pulled two knives from a bag and stabbed a 68 year old man in the abdomen as he exited a subway station. Within approximately 20 seconds, she stabbed a 32 year old woman in the abdomen. Both victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead and the man remained in stable condition.
Police officers confronted Cisneros and attempted to persuade her to drop the weapons for approximately four minutes. Witness accounts and official reports state that officers deployed Tasers, which were ineffective. Commissioner Tisch reported that Cisneros told officers, "I am not dropping anything. I would rather kill both of you." Two officers then opened fire after she charged toward them. Cisneros later died at the hospital.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Commissioner Tisch stated that the attack appeared to be random and unprovoked. Authorities noted that Cisneros had a documented history of mental illness and that there is no evidence to suggest the attack was terror related. Mayor Mamdani thanked the responding officers for preventing the attack from escalating and announced that an internal investigation would be conducted and body camera footage would be released.
