Ousted Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov Calls for Wartime Elections

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov called for the country to hold elections during the ongoing war in a video address on Tuesday. Fedorov argued that Ukraine must find a legal, safe, and realistic mechanism to renew its democratic process so that the military, citizens abroad, and those near the front lines can vote. He stated that democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia and criticized the current government for a systemic crisis of governance and corruption.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed the 35 year old Fedorov from his post in July. This dismissal triggered protests involving thousands of people in Kyiv who demanded Fedorov's reinstatement and the sacking of the commander in chief of the armed forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi. While Zelenskyy cited an inability for Fedorov to work with Syrskyi as the reason for the firing, Syrskyi was eventually dismissed under public pressure. Fedorov has since been replaced by Yevhenii Khmara, whose confirmation by parliament was pending shortly after the video address.

Fedorov is a tech savvy politician who previously served as the digitalization chief and was the youngest member of Zelenskyy's first cabinet. He is known for advocating the use of new technologies and drone warfare. Ukrainian law currently prohibits elections during wartime, a situation that has led to external criticism regarding Zelenskyy's legitimacy.

Center leaning reports frame the event as a significant political problem for Zelenskyy, noting a pattern of the president marginalizing popular figures like former general Valeri Zalujni. Center left framing emphasizes the event as a bombshell address and the biggest internal challenge to Zelenskyy since the 2022 invasion, highlighting a poll suggesting Fedorov could beat the president in a runoff vote.
