Owner of Large Dog Arrested After Two Small Pets Killed in Yuen Long

Authorities in Hong Kong have arrested the owner of a 60kg dog that fatally attacked two smaller pets in Yuen Long on Monday. The incidents occurred within 20 minutes of each other; a miniature poodle was attacked near a public transit hub and a bichon frise was mauled at Dot Park in Yoho Mall. The dog was wearing a collar but lacked a leash or muzzle during the attacks. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) confirmed the dog was licensed and microchipped. The AFCD also revealed that the same dog had been detained on July 10 for a previous attack on another canine before being released with a warning about leash requirements. The owner was arrested on Tuesday afternoon, and the dog remains under observation at a management centre. Authorities stated they will initiate prosecution if sufficient evidence is found. Under the Dangerous Dogs Regulation, dogs weighing 20kg or more must be held on a leash of no more than two metres in public spaces. Violators face a fine of HK$25,000 and three months in prison. In a separate incident on Tuesday morning, a 54 year old man was bitten on the leg by a six year old mongrel at a car park in Shek O while the dog was being walked by a domestic worker.
