Pakistan and Iran Discuss Regional Peace Amid New US Sanctions

Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited Tehran to hold talks with Iranian leadership focused on preventing further escalation of conflict and promoting regional peace. According to a statement from the Pakistani military and comments from Minister Naqvi, the discussions centered on a path to peace, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and a negotiated settlement to disputes. Naqvi described the exchange with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian as constructive and highly positive, noting efforts to restore the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

The visit occurred as the United States launched Operation Economic Outcast. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and the State Department announced sweeping sanctions targeting Iranian military activities, cyber threats, and illicit oil trade to sever economic lifelines to the regime. In response, Iranian Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh stated that Iran is prepared for the sanctions, while Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vowed blows to US vital interests and energy chokepoints if Iranian infrastructure is threatened.
