Pakistan is attempting to revive its mediation efforts between Iran and the United States to resolve tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi traveled to Tehran on Tuesday, where he met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to follow up on a stalled agreement known as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif told Bloomberg that the United States and Iran are close to some sort of an arrangement and that signals indicate a move toward a peace deal.
While Pakistan pushes for a broader resolution, Iran has been negotiating a separate arrangement with Oman regarding navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports from a center left source, Tehran views the Oman talks as a technical first stage and maintains that the strait will only fully reopen once the United States addresses alleged violations of the original Islamabad MoU. The diplomatic push occurs as Pakistan balances regional ties, having recently signed a trilateral defence agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkiye.
