The annual Perseid meteor shower is reaching its peak. Space enthusiasts in the UK and Germany are expected to see the display, with some astronomers predicting up to one hundred shooting stars per hour. The Perseids are caused by the Earth crossing a cloud of particles left by the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. These particles enter the atmosphere at speeds of 216,000 kilometers per hour, creating light phenomena at altitudes between 80 and 100 kilometers. Experts suggest viewing the shower with the naked eye from locations with dark skies to avoid light pollution.
This event coincides with a partial solar eclipse. In parts of Germany, the moon will cover between 84 and 90 percent of the sun during sunset. The European Space Agency notes that the sun will be completely darkened over Greenland, Iceland, the northern parts of Spain, the Balearic Islands, and a small portion of northeast Portugal.
