President Lai Oversees Han Kuang Military Drills in Kaohsiung

Taiwan's military and coast guard conducted exercises in the southern port city of Kaohsiung on Saturday as part of the annual Han Kuang military drills. The exercises simulated efforts to prevent an amphibious landing by forces from mainland China. President Lai Ching-te inspected the drills from the bridge of a missile boat, stating that the exercises are designed to assess command coordination, combat responsiveness, and the ability to defend the island under wartime conditions.

The drills featured the deployment of special operations assault boats and drones. Specifically, the military tested a medium sized kamikaze drone and an attack drone for coastal defense operations. The Coast Guard Administration also tested the ability of its patrol vessels to transition to wartime roles. An Anping class patrol vessel led four Kuang Hua VI class missile boats to sea to simulate an engagement with invading ships.

President Lai emphasized that the government will continue to strengthen defense capabilities in the face of external threats and challenges. These exercises occur amid intensified cross strait tensions since Lai took office in 2024. China views Taiwan as a province to be brought into its fold by force if necessary and has expanded maritime operations around the island. Taiwan regards this increased activity as a growing threat.
