President Lai Participates in Han Kuang Military Exercises

Taiwan has launched its annual Han Kuang military exercises to bolster preparations for a possible Chinese invasion. As part of the drills, President Lai Ching-te participated in an anti-decapitation exercise on Wednesday. Footage showed the president boarding a Clouded Leopard armored vehicle and being escorted in a convoy to the National Political and Military Operations Command Center in Taipei. This specific drill, known as the Wan Chun Plan, simulates the continuity of government and the protection of the head of state during a simulated strike by the People's Liberation Army. Local reports indicated that three convoys were used to confuse the enemy and that U.S. government personnel were observed monitoring the exercise.

On Thursday, President Lai boarded a Coast Guard Administration vessel in New Taipei's Bali District to observe coastal defense operations. During this visit, he inspected missile launcher systems and received briefings on coastal strike operations. He also visited a loading area at Taipei Port to review mine deployment measures conducted by the Army's 53rd Engineer Group.

The exercises spanned multiple regions of Taiwan. In northern Taiwan, Patriot and Sky Bow missile units were deployed to riverside parks to minimize disruption to civilian facilities. In central Taiwan, troops in Changhua County conducted drone reconnaissance and military-civilian logistics drills. In southern Taiwan, engineers practiced road barrier deployment at Kaohsiung International Airport. Meanwhile, in eastern Taiwan, troops boarded passenger vessels at Fugang Fishing Port to reinforce Green Island and Lanyu. These specific drills were based on a scenario in which the People's Liberation Army attempts to seize the islands as forward bases for an attack on Taiwan.
