Psychologist Testifies Against Insanity Defense in Lindsay Clancy Trial

A psychologist testified during the prosecution's rebuttal case that Lindsay Clancy did not experience acute psychosis when she killed her three children in January 2023. Kirk Heilbrun stated that Clancy's claim of hearing a male voice commanding her to kill herself and her children was inconsistent and rare for such cases. He described the killings as altruistic filicide, suggesting Clancy killed her children because she planned to commit suicide and believed they would suffer without her.

Clancy, 36, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to three counts of murder for the deaths of her children: Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months. Her defense team argues she was experiencing a psychotic episode stemming from postpartum mental illness and did not appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions. Prosecutors argue she acted intentionally and rationally.

The trial has drawn attention to the issue of postpartum psychosis, with some mothers using the proceedings as a catalyst to share their own experiences with the disorder. During the proceedings, a judge denied a defense request for a mistrial after Heilbrun mentioned Clancy's Roman Catholic religion while discussing her mindset. Closing arguments are expected to take place on Wednesday, though the judge noted the timeline is subject to change.
