Rare and Violent Tornado Devastates Village in Southern France

A violent tornado struck the village of Pomas in the Aude region of southwestern France late Monday afternoon, leaving 39 people injured and damaging approximately 300 homes. Two of the injured individuals remain in critical condition. The tornado, which hit the village of about 1,000 residents near Carcassonne, caused widespread destruction including uprooted trees, gutted vehicles, and houses reduced to rubble. Local authorities evacuated residents to inspect the safety of homes, and roughly 1,400 residences in the region were left without power on Tuesday morning.

Witnesses described the event as traumatic. One resident, Severine, told reporters that her family survived by sheltering in a car that was shaken by the wind before they were able to escape. He described the lack of fatalities as a miracle.

Météo France had previously issued an orange alert for storms in several southwestern departments. The storm occurred as an intense summer heatwave gave way to severe weather across southern France and parts of Spain, where heavy rains and hail were also reported.
