Record Heat and Drought Grip Europe

Europe is experiencing unprecedented temperature records and severe drought across multiple countries. In Austria, Vienna recorded a new national temperature record of 40.8 degrees Celsius. France and the United Kingdom both experienced their hottest and driest July on record. In France, the average temperature for July reached 24.9 degrees Celsius, surpassing previous records from 2003 and 2006. The United Kingdom saw extreme precipitation deficits, with some areas near Reading recording no measurable rainfall for the first time since 1858, and London potentially seeing no rain throughout the entire month of July.

These weather extremes have led to significant environmental and social disruptions. A large forest fire broke out in a Dutch nature reserve near the German border, covering approximately 100 hectares and forcing the evacuation of a nearby campsite. In Germany, the number of extremely hot summer days has doubled since the 1990s and tripled since the early 1960s. This shift is altering travel patterns, as tourists increasingly avoid Mediterranean beaches in favor of northern destinations during the summer.

Scientific analysis attributes these events to human activity. A study by World Weather Attribution stated that the European heatwave would not have occurred without climate change, noting that the burning of fossil fuels has made agricultural soil drought five times more likely in Western Europe and 11 times more likely in Eastern Europe.
