Relief operations are underway in Kumamoto Prefecture following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on July 28. The disaster resulted in 39 deaths, left over 6,500 people in evacuation shelters, and damaged or destroyed approximately 18,000 houses. U.S. Forces supported the effort by airlifting about 33,000 bottles of drinking water to the region.

Local municipalities have begun accepting disaster relief volunteers. As of Friday, 1,293 registered volunteers have entered the prefecture to assist with cleaning houses and removing debris. Volunteer centers have been established in 11 municipalities, with 10 of them already dispatching workers to meet local requests.
