Renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja and nine other members of his expedition died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. Elite Exped, the company co-founded by Purja, confirmed the deaths on Saturday, August 1. The group was struck by the avalanche on Thursday, July 30, while ascending the 8,047 meter peak in the Karakoram range. The avalanche occurred at an altitude of approximately 6,600 meters, and tracking data indicated the climbers were thrown hundreds of meters down the mountainside.
The international expedition consisted of ten people, including six Nepalese climbers, one Pakistani, one Chinese, one American, and one Omani. Pakistani authorities recovered the bodies of American Mallory Geis, Omani Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy, and Nepalese guide Pur Bahadur Gurung. Other confirmed victims include Nima Sherpa. Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah expressed shock at the tragedy, noting the courage and dedication of the deceased.
Purja, 43, gained international fame for climbing all 14 of the world's peaks over 8,000 meters in 189 days in 2019. His achievements were chronicled in the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible. A former member of the British Special Boat Service and the Gurkhas, Purja had recently written on X that he hoped to become the first person to climb all 14 eight-thousanders twice without oxygen. Search efforts were hampered by heavy snowfall and poor visibility, which forced rescuers to pause operations on Friday before resuming on Saturday.
