Reports of Poor Conditions and Suicide Attempts Aboard USS Abraham Lincoln Spark US Controversy

The USS Abraham Lincoln has spent over 250 days at sea during a mission in the Middle East supporting operations in the war against Iran, breaking a modern record for consecutive days without a prolonged port visit. Reports from family members of the crew and specialized publications such as Stars and Stripes and Navy Times indicate a crisis of mental health and logistics on board. These reports include accounts of sailors attempting to jump overboard due to exhaustion and mental health struggles. CNN reported that at least two sailors fell into the sea in recent months; one in August from the USS Abraham Lincoln and another in April from the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. Both were rescued and received medical care. Family members have further alleged severe shortages of food, soap, toothpaste, and deodorants, as well as malfunctioning laundry and toilet facilities. The Navy and the Pentagon have denied these claims. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth described reports of deteriorating conditions as distorted and fake news. President Donald Trump also rejected the notion that families are concerned about the crew's conditions. While the Pentagon confirmed the USS Abraham Lincoln will be replaced by the USS George Washington, officials stated this swap was planned and not a result of the reported crises.
