Every source for this story reports from Brazil.

Marcos Pereira, the national president of the Republicanos party, has blocked Senator Cleitinho Azevedo from running for governor of Minas Gerais. Pereira stated that he vetoed the candidacy because he feared the senator might withdraw from the race in the middle of the campaign.

Pereira cited instability in the senator's behavior during negotiations and a lack of confirmation regarding his intentions. He specifically noted that Cleitinho missed the party's state convention last weekend. While Pereira acknowledged that the senator was mourning the death of his brother, he argued that Cleitinho could have sent a proxy to ensure the candidacy was approved.

The party leader described the decision as irreversible and indicated that Republicanos will likely support Marcelo Aro of the PP party for governor.

According to reports from a center-right outlet, Cleitinho intends to try to convince Pereira to reverse this decision. The senator explained that he prioritized his family during his brother's treatment for leukemia before his death on August 18. He also denied participating in meetings with other parties, such as PP, União Brasil, or PL, to negotiate a withdrawal or support another candidate.
