Rescue Operations End in Kumamoto Following Magnitude 7.1 Earthquake

Rescue operations have concluded at an Aeon shopping center in Kashima after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday. A possible gas explosion caused the second floor of the shopping center to collapse, killing seven workers. Across the prefecture, 36 people have died and 11 were seriously injured. The earthquake caused damage to over 3,400 houses, including 181 that were destroyed, and left approximately 69,400 households without water.

Infrastructure recovery is ongoing as the central government has requested increased petroleum deliveries to address fuel shortages caused by evacuees staying in cars with air conditioning. In the city of Kumamoto, Andrew Mitchell, an assistant professor at Kumamoto University, used lessons from the 2016 earthquakes to protect himself and help others. Mitchell, who co-founded the Kumamoto Earthquake Experience Project, shared official disaster information with a group of over 400 international students and foreign residents to overcome language barriers and misinformation.
