Russia and Ukraine exchanged a wave of missile and drone strikes overnight on Sunday, resulting in several deaths and dozens of injuries across both nations. In Ukraine, Russian attacks on the city of Kharkiv killed two people and injured at least 21 after a high rise in the Saltivskyi district was hit. In the southern port city of Odesa, Russian strikes damaged the port and energy infrastructure, leaving at least eight people injured and causing significant power outages. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the attacks on Odesa represent a war against global food security, as the port is a primary artery for agricultural exports. Additionally, the World Health Organization confirmed that a warehouse storing emergency medical supplies in Dnipro was destroyed in a Russian attack, though no casualties were reported at that site.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian drone attacks targeted the Russian border region of Belgorod, where authorities reported five deaths and 25 injuries. Russian officials stated that several apartment blocks and administrative buildings were damaged. Other Ukrainian strikes targeted the Black Sea ports of Novorossiysk and Gelendzhik, as well as oil refineries in the Sumy region. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted over 150 Ukrainian drones during the night and asserted that their strikes in Ukraine targeted military equipment and fuel depots.
Amid the escalation, reports indicate that Ukraine is purchasing a package of US made weaponry from Turkey, including 70 ATACMS rockets and 12 M270 multiple launch rocket systems, valued at 283 million dollars. This move comes as President Zelenskyy continues to press Western allies for more Patriot missile interceptors to protect civilian infrastructure. Pope Leo XIV called for an end to the violence and urged the use of diplomacy to stop the increasing number of civilian casualties.
