Russian drones struck a large shopping center in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih on Friday, killing at least 16 people and injuring 130 others. The city is the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelensky. Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha reported that 23 children were among the wounded, and 29 people remained in serious condition, including five children. Rescue operations continued into Saturday as officials reported that nine people, including two children, remained missing in the rubble.
President Zelensky described the attack as absolutely cynical and despicable. He stated that the drones struck in two waves, with a second attack hitting the site approximately 30 minutes after the first to target emergency responders. This tactic is referred to as a double tap strike. Mayor Oleksandr Vilkul added that the drones flew at extremely low altitudes and that the second strike involved a jet powered Shahed type drone. The target was identified by some reports as the Sonyachna Halereya, the largest mall in the city.
Framing of the event varied by political lean. Other Russian strikes occurred across Ukraine during the same period. At least four people died in the Mykolaiv region, and two died in the Kharkiv region. In Kyiv, a warehouse fire on Saturday left one person dead. These events followed a major Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv on Thursday that killed 17 people. In response, Ukraine reported carrying out strikes on a Russian oil refinery in Perm and a military airfield in Akhtubinsk.
