Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met in Moscow to discuss bilateral cooperation focusing on trade, energy, fertilisers, and high technology. During the meeting, President Putin assured India of continued supplies of fuel and fertilisers despite disruptions caused by the conflict in West Asia. The discussions took place while Jaishankar co chaired a meeting of the Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation.
Minister Jaishankar highlighted a significant widening of the trade imbalance, noting that the gap has grown to over 50 billion dollars as bilateral trade in goods increased from 13 billion dollars in 2021 to 2022 to nearly 60 billion dollars in 2025 to 2026. To address this, Jaishankar proposed focusing on implementation, strengthening business engagement, and identifying policy bottlenecks to reach a shared trade objective of 100 billion dollars by 2030. Both leaders also noted progress in nuclear energy and high tech cooperation.
Jaishankar conveyed a message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing hope that President Putin will attend the Brics Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. The two leaders are also expected to meet on the margins of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Kyrgyzstan later this month. Additional discussions included connectivity, space, the mobility of professionals, and progress toward a free trade agreement between India and the Eurasian Economic Union.
