A deadly avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan has left ten mountaineers buried, with four bodies recovered and six still missing. The incident occurred on Thursday, July 30, at an altitude between 6,450 and 7,000 meters as a multinational expedition was making its summit push. Among the missing is renowned Nepali climber Nirmal Purja, also known as Nims Dai, who gained global fame for climbing all 14 of the world's highest peaks in record time. Other missing climbers include Sohail Sakhi of Pakistan, Mallory Geis of the United States, Wang Zhong of China, and several Nepali Sherpas. Of the four bodies recovered, two have been officially identified as Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy of Oman and Pur Bahadur Gurung of Nepal. Rescue operations involving the Pakistan Army Aviation and specialized alpine teams have been hampered by adverse weather and the remote, high altitude terrain. GPS data suggests the climbers may have been swept nearly 1,000 meters downhill. Diplomatic coordination is ongoing between Pakistan, Nepal, and China to assist in the search and support the families of the climbers.
