Temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius in Seoul and other parts of South Korea on Friday, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). An automatic weather station in Seoul's Nowon ward recorded 40.2 C at 3:28 p.m. marking the first time the capital has seen temperatures above 40 C since August 1, 2018. Other high readings included 40.7 C in Hanam and 40.2 C in Gwangyang. Yeongwol and Yeoju both recorded temperatures of 39.8 C.

Data from June 1 through Thursday shows that South Korea averaged 14.8 heat wave days, which is the fourth highest for that period since 1973. The country also recorded a record 13 tropical nights, defined as nights where the minimum temperature remains at or above 25 C. The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters reported that heat related illnesses have reached 2,665 cases, including 23 deaths.

The KMA expects the extreme heat to ease slightly over the weekend, with daytime highs forecast between 26 C and 35 C. In response to the forecast, the KMA announced it would downgrade serious heat wave warnings in Seoul and other regions to ordinary warnings starting Friday evening.
