- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
A wave of gun violence has rattled the Brussels municipality of Saint Gilles, where shootings occurred for three consecutive days. On Monday night, a gunman using an automatic weapon, identified as a Kalashnikov, opened fire near the Bruxelles Midi train station. This incident followed a shooting on Saturday evening in the same area and a shot fired into an apartment window on Sunday morning. While one source reports two people were injured on Monday night, another states no injuries occurred during that specific event. The attacker from Monday night has not been apprehended, though two suspects were arrested during separate gunfire on Sunday night and Monday morning.
Federal Interior Minister Bernard Quintin described the incidents as totally inacceptable and linked the violence to drug trafficking. He announced that federal judicial police forces in Brussels have been reinforced. Saint Gilles mayor Jean Spinette has called for federal assistance, noting that bullet holes are in the ground and that basic public order is being violated. According to federal police data, there were 66 shootings in Brussels between January 1 and July 31, 2026, resulting in two deaths and 25 injuries.
Outlets with a center lean focused on the immediate chaos and the mayor's plea for help. Outlets with a center right lean framed the events as part of a broader systemic failure linked to drug trafficking and political disputes over police administration.
How each side framed it
- Centre
- Focused on the immediate impact of the violence and the local mayor's distress.
- Centre-right
- Framed the violence as a symptom of drug trafficking and a catalyst for political debate regarding security management.
