At least seven workers have died and three remain missing after a landslide sent water and debris into an under-construction tunnel in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. The incident occurred late Thursday night at the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydroelectric project in the Chamoli district. According to officials, 22 people were working in the tunnel at the time; 12 have been rescued alive and 13 others were reported injured.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the site on Friday and described the effort to reach the missing workers as a war-like rescue operation. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force, the state Disaster Response Force, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and fire services are currently operating at the site. Amrit Lal Meena, commander of the National Disaster Response Force team, stated that rescue workers encountered significant water levels that continued to increase as they entered the tunnel.
