At least seven people died and several others were injured after a landslide struck the Ghatkopar area of Mumbai in the early hours of Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The incident occurred at 3:48 a.m. at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar of Ghatkopar West, where soil and debris from a hillside collapsed onto two or three nearby houses. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) classified the event as a Level II incident, which indicates a serious situation requiring resources beyond the immediate ward.
Rescue operations involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Mumbai Fire Brigade, and Mumbai Police were launched to locate one person believed to be trapped under the debris. Authorities noted that the narrow routes leading to the site hindered rescue efforts. The deceased include children aged two and four, as well as adults. Mumbai Police stated that a family of four who died had recently moved to the chawl from Uttar Pradesh.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site and announced financial assistance of 4 lakh rupees for the next of kin of each deceased person and 50,000 rupees for each injured person. While the mayor stated that authorities made every possible effort to rescue those trapped, one resident suggested that more lives might have been saved if the response had been faster. The BMC had previously issued notices and advised residents to evacuate areas at risk of landslips as part of pre monsoon precautionary measures.
