Seven military officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force have been disciplined for lax management of firearms and ammunition since July of last year. According to data submitted to Rep. Kim Byung-joo of the Democratic Party, two of these officers received heavy disciplinary action: a Navy officer was given a one month suspension and an Air Force officer was demoted by one rank. These measures follow an extensive inspection launched by the defense ministry in October last year after a series of firearm related deaths and missing ammunition. This includes a case last month where a noncommissioned Marine officer was found dead from a gunshot wound at an off base housing unit in Pohang. Rep. Kim stated that the armed forces should strengthen routine inspections and reporting systems due to public concern. The defense ministry is scheduled to begin its regular two month inspection of firearms and ammunition at approximately 300 military units on Tuesday.
