Singapore Urges Israel to Halt West Bank Settlement Expansion

Singapore has urged the Israeli government to halt settlement expansion plans in the West Bank, stating that such settlements are illegal under international law. In a statement released on August 24, a spokesperson for Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) specifically called for a halt to proposed construction in the E1 area. The MFA stated that this construction would further fragment the West Bank and severely undermine the prospects for a viable two state solution.

Israeli authorities recently opened bidding for more than 1,200 homes in the E1 area, a project that was green lit last year. The E1 area is a tract of land located between Jerusalem and the Israeli settlement of Maale Adumim. While one source notes the plan eventually seeks to build around 3,400 homes, another reports that approximately 3,700 Palestinians, mostly Bedouin living in 18 villages, currently reside in the area.

Singapore also expressed deep concern regarding an increase in settler violence against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank. The MFA called on the Israeli government to take firm action to prevent such violence and hold those responsible accountable. Singapore reiterated that a negotiated two state solution, consistent with United Nations Security Council resolutions, remains the only viable pathway to a comprehensive, just, and durable peace.
