South Korean President Lee Jae-myung Announces Major Cabinet Reshuffle

President Lee Jae-myung of South Korea has appointed six new cabinet ministers and several presidential office officials in an effort to boost his administration. The reshuffle includes the replacement of the ministers for Finance, Justice, and Defense. Lee Hyoung-il, a technocrat and former vice minister, will serve as the new Minister of Economy and Finance and deputy prime minister. Hong Ji-sun will replace Kim Yoon-duk as the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and Lee So-young will lead the Ministry of Start-ups and Small and Medium Enterprises.

In a significant shift for the military, Kang Shin-chul will become the new Defense Minister. Unlike his predecessor, Ahn Gyu-back, who was the first civilian in the role for decades, Kang is a military member with extensive experience working with the United States. The presidential office stated that Kang will prioritize the development of independent defense capabilities, specifically the transfer of wartime operational control from the U.S. to South Korea. Additionally, Kim Seung-won, a lawmaker who advocated for prosecution reform, has been named Justice Minister.

Center-left reporting frames the move as a general intent to boost the administration. In contrast, center-right reporting frames the reshuffle as a liberation strike intended to recover from a drop in approval ratings, which fell to 42 percent from a high of 66 percent in April. This decline is attributed to inflation, high energy prices, and dissatisfaction with housing policy. While the center-right source notes that the conservative opposition criticized the appointment of the Justice Minister as unnecessary politicization, it also observes that the overall political direction of the president remains largely unchanged.
