- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index fell more than 4 percent on Thursday, driven by significant losses in technology shares. The index closed at 6,296.38, representing a drop of 4.58 percent. Semiconductor companies were among the hardest hit, with Samsung Electronics falling 6.3 percent and SK Hynix plunging 10.37 percent. One report noted that SK Hynix experienced a flash crash of over 30 percent at the opening of trade in Seoul.
Market analysts attribute the decline to profit taking following a recent recovery in semiconductor values and lingering concerns regarding the profitability of large scale investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. These concerns were mirrored in the United States, where Nasdaq listed tech heavyweights saw sell offs overnight. The South Korean bourse operator activated a sell side sidecar for five minutes at 10:18 a.m. to halt program trading as losses extended.
Trading activity showed that foreigners sold a net 3.33 trillion won worth of stocks, while individual investors purchased a net 3.34 trillion won. While tech and shipbuilding sectors were weak, some gains were seen in defense and pharmaceuticals, with Hanwha Aerospace rising 4.67 percent and Samsung Biologics gaining 1.54 percent.
Outlets with a center right lean framed the event as a warning sign of a potential profit bubble and a transition from AI euphoria to a harder reality of financial figures. In contrast, the center lean outlet focused on the immediate urgency of the market tumble and the specific percentage losses in the Seoul shares.
