The southwest monsoon, or habagat, continued to bring significant rainfall to Metro Manila and over 20 provinces on Saturday, August 8. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecast heavy to intense rain of 100 to 200 millimeters for areas including Occidental Mindoro, Zambales, Bataan, and parts of Northern Luzon. In Oriental Mindoro, authorities warned that persistent rains could trigger widespread flooding and landslides, particularly in low lying and urbanized communities.
The weather conditions led the Philippine Coast Guard to suspend sea travel for vessels and motorboats 250 GT and below in Zambales. This suspension follows a previous lift on Thursday after Tropical Depression Maymay weakened. According to PAGASA, the current monsoon is being enhanced by Typhoon Dolphin, which remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility. Additionally, weather specialists are monitoring a new low pressure area east of Northern Luzon that has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within 24 hours.
