Human-caused climate change has made the extreme weather conditions that fueled Canada's 2026 wildfires approximately twice as likely to occur, according to a study by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group. The research focused on Ontario and the North-west Territories, two of the most affected regions. More than 3.8 million hectares have burned this year, displacing thousands of people and exposing millions to dangerous levels of smoke.
Researchers used climate models to compare current conditions with a hypothetical world without human-induced warming. They found that in the current climate, such extreme fire weather is expected every two to six years in the North-west Territories and every six to 15 years in Ontario. Without climate change, these conditions would have been expected only once every 40 years. Theodore Keeping, a researcher at Imperial College London, stated that the scale and intensity of wildfires in Canada have been fundamentally different since 2023.
The study clarifies that it did not analyze whether climate change directly started each fire, as fires can be triggered by lightning or human activity. Instead, it examined the conditions, such as high temperatures and low humidity, that allow flames to spread rapidly. The WWA noted that indigenous communities were disproportionately affected among the populations evacuated from risk areas.
