The earliest sparkling wine harvest in Burgundy in nearly 700 years has begun, beating the previous record from August 13, 2022, by five days. This trend is mirrored across France, with early Crémant harvests also reported in Champagne and the southwest Bordelais, while some growers in the southern Languedoc-Roussillon region began picking berries in July. However, drought and persistent heat have slowed the ripening of red and white wines in Burgundy, pushing their expected harvest date to around August 25.
These events align with a study by climate historian Thomas Labbé published in the journal Climate of the Past. By analyzing harvest data from Beaune dating back to 1354, Labbé identified an explosion of extreme years. The research shows that while periods of extreme heat and early harvests occurred every 17 years on average between 1354 and 1719, the frequency increased to every five years after 1988. In the 21st century, such years have occurred roughly every two and a half years.
