A suspected Islamist terror attack at Berlin's Pride celebrations killed a 65 year old Polish woman and injured 29 others on Saturday evening. The suspect, identified as 21 year old Abdul Ballout, was shot dead by police on Sunday in the Spandau district after he allegedly charged officers with a bladed weapon.
Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese heritage, was known to security services and had a history of Islamist extremist activity. Prosecutors stated that he attempted to join the Islamic State in Syria via Lebanon in 2025, where he was arrested and imprisoned for three months. Upon returning to Germany, he was convicted in May for preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state; however, he received a suspended sentence of one year and ten months under juvenile law.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz vowed a determined response and questioned how Ballout could carry out the attack despite being under surveillance. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt proposed a three point security package that includes making ankle monitors standard for dangerous persons, establishing uniform rules for preventive detention, and reforming juvenile criminal law. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner criticized the judiciary's decision to grant a suspended sentence.
