Tadej Pogacar Undergoes Successful Collarbone Surgery Following Vuelta a España Crash

Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar underwent successful surgery on his left clavicle on Monday afternoon at the Hospital Universitario Dexeus in Barcelona. The procedure was performed by surgeon Xavier Mir after Pogacar was forced to abandon the Vuelta a España, a race he was leading with a significant advantage. According to Adrian Rotunno, the medical director of UAE Team Emirates, the operation went well and Pogacar will remain hospitalized for several days for post-operative monitoring before beginning his rehabilitation.

The injury resulted from a severe crash during the eighth stage of the Vuelta. In addition to the displaced clavicle fracture, which required the use of plates and screws for reconstruction, reports indicate Pogacar suffered a concussion, a stable cervical fracture of the C7 vertebra, and multiple abrasions. This marks the first time the cyclist has abandoned a stage race since joining UAE Team Emirates in 2019.

There is conflicting analysis regarding Pogacar's return to competition for the remainder of the 2026 season. One center-left source frames the recovery as a major blow, stating that his participation in the World Championships in Montreal on September 27 is practically inviable. This source also suggests that the European Championship on October 7 and the Giro di Lombardia on October 10 are unlikely. Conversely, another center-left source frames the situation with more optimism, noting that Pogacar has not ruled out the World Championships and that the Giro di Lombardia remains a possibility given his exceptional physical condition.
