Taiwan Concludes Annual Military Exercises Amid Rising China Tensions

Taiwan has concluded its annual Han Kuang military maneuvers, which focused on realistic combat scenarios to prepare for a potential invasion by China. The exercises included the rejection of amphibious landings, the blocking of strategic tunnels and bridges, and the dispersal of weapons production lines. For the first time, the Navy and Coast Guard conducted a joint maritime escort and counter blockade maneuver in waters east of the island. To simulate a wartime environment, the drills included a controlled slowing of mobile data networks in the central and northern regions. President Lai Ching te participated in an emergency evacuation to a protected command post as part of an effort to involve all sectors of society in territorial defense.

Concurrent with these drills, China concluded a joint naval exercise with Indonesia off Taiwan's eastern coast, marking the first time China has conducted such an exercise with a foreign navy in that area. The Taiwanese government condemned this move, accusing the Chinese Communist Party of attempting to project a false image of jurisdiction over those waters. In response to ongoing military pressure, the Taiwanese executive branch plans to propose a 16 percent increase in defense spending for 2027, which would bring the budget above 3 percent of the GDP. Additionally, the United States has urged China to halt its military pressure on Taiwan following the naval drills.
