Taiwan Condemns Planned China Indonesia Naval Drill East of Island

Taiwan has condemned a planned naval exercise between China and Indonesia scheduled for mid August in waters east of the island. China's defense ministry announced on Tuesday that one of its warships and an Indonesian frigate will conduct a passage exercise to enhance joint operational capabilities and safeguard regional peace and stability. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council described the move as a military provocation and political manipulation intended to create a false impression that Beijing has jurisdiction over the area. The council stated that the drill infringes upon national sovereignty and maritime rights.

Chinese military analyst Zhang Junshe told the Global Times that inviting foreign ships to train in waters under Chinese jurisdiction is normal and reasonable. This announcement follows a period of increased Chinese presence in the Western Pacific, including coast guard patrols and traffic control measures in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan's military intelligence official Wu Tien jen stated that the Indonesian warship was returning from Japan rather than deploying specifically for the drill, noting that while the event has geopolitical significance, it does not have a direct military impact on Taiwan.

The announcement coincided with Taiwan's annual Han Kuang military exercises and a meeting in Jakarta between US Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby and Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin. During that meeting, Sjafrie clarified that defense cooperation with the United States is not intended to establish US military bases in Indonesia. The Indonesian military did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Taiwan's foreign ministry has requested clarification from Indonesia regarding its participation in the drill.
