Taiwan President Oversees Coastal Strike Drills During Annual Han Kuang Exercises

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te supervised coastal attack exercises on Saturday as part of the annual Han Kuang military maneuvers. During the drills at a naval base in Kaohsiung, Lai boarded a fast attack missile boat and observed the deployment of low flying attack drones designed to simulate defenses against a maritime assault. The Han Kuang exercises began on Wednesday and are scheduled to last ten days, focusing on strengthening the island's combat readiness.

The maneuvers included the use of Anping class catamarans from the Coast Guard, which are equipped with anti ship missiles. Additionally, the Taiwan air force demonstrated the rapid rearming of French made Mirage fighter jets with Magic II and MICA air to air missiles at the Hsinchu air base. Technical personnel also exhibited methods for repairing damaged runways and taxiways using stones, sand, and fiberglass mats.

President Lai stated that the goal of the exercise is to use real troops, terrain, and equipment to test command coordination and national defense capabilities. While he did not mention China by name during the maneuvers, he emphasized the need to strengthen defense capabilities in the face of external threats and challenges. William Yang, a senior analyst at the International Crisis Group, noted that this year's exercises incorporate U.S. style training methods to move away from performative displays toward real combat capabilities.
