Tehseen Poonawalla Claims House Arrest Ahead of E20 Fuel Protest

Political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla claimed on Saturday that Delhi Police placed him under house arrest to prevent a planned hunger strike against the central government's E20 ethanol blended fuel policy. In videos posted to X, Poonawalla alleged that a battalion of officers, including women, prevented him from leaving his residence without providing official paperwork. He targeted Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, stating that the minister is scared of ethanol. Poonawalla had previously announced a solo walk to Gandhi Smriti for an indefinite hunger strike after police denied permission for a proposed car march to Parliament on July 31.

Poonawalla and other critics argue that the E20 rollout, which blends 20 percent ethanol with petrol, damages engines and reduces fuel economy for vehicles designed for E10 fuel. His demands include making E10 fuel and ethanol free petrol available at affordable prices, as well as releasing all E20 related documents to the public. In response to these concerns, Minister Nitin Gadkari told Parliament that E20 offers better acceleration and lower carbon emissions, though he acknowledged it could lower fuel economy by 2 to 6 percent depending on the vehicle.

The event is part of a broader wave of opposition to the policy. The Aam Aadmi Party announced a National Town Hall against E20, and transport unions in Delhi have planned a march to Parliament on August 4. While center and center right reports focus on the specific claims of house arrest and the government's defense of the policy, the left leaning report provides additional context regarding the environmental goals of the policy and a public opinion poll suggesting a majority of petrol vehicle owners view the rollout as ineffective. The Delhi Police have not issued an official statement regarding the house arrest allegations.
