Ten Climbers Killed in Broad Peak Avalanche

An avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak has killed ten climbers, including world renowned British Nepali climber Nirmal Purja and six elite Nepali guides. The event has caused widespread mourning in Nepal, where approximately 500 people gathered for a candlelight vigil in Kathmandu. In Pakistan, funeral prayers were held for climber Sohail Sakhi in his hometown of Aliabad in Hunza. Broad Peak is the 12th highest mountain in the world.

Nirmal Purja, 43, was a leading figure of the international team. He was famous for scaling the world's 14 highest peaks in just over six months and was part of the first winter ascent of K2 in 2021. Other Nepali victims included Kili Pemba Sherpa, who had recently completed the mountaineering Grand Slam, and Pur Bahadur Gurung, one of only 100 Nepali guides certified by the International Federation of Mountain Guides Association. Other identified victims include Wang Zhong of China, Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy of Oman, and Sarah Mallory Geis of the United States.

Recovery efforts have been hampered by adverse weather and treacherous terrain. While eight bodies have been recovered, two others, including Sohail Sakhi and a Nepali Sherpa, remained missing as of recent reports. The loss is described by the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association as the loss of a generation of accomplished mountaineers.
