- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
Every outlet covering this story shares the same political lean; read with that in mind.
Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated following the expiration of a 60 day deadline on Monday to reach an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program and a ceasefire. The deadline was part of a memorandum of understanding signed in June that has since collapsed. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the June agreement is essentially void and that the 60 day window is no longer relevant. While Qatar is attempting to mediate a return to negotiations, the process remains stalled over the status of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has closed the strait since mid July following U.S. bombings in southern Iran and subsequent Iranian attacks on U.S. targets in the Middle East. Tehran demands an end to the war, the lifting of port blockades, and the ability to sell oil internationally in exchange for reopening the strait. However, Iran insists on maintaining control of the strait and charging maritime service fees, a condition the United States rejects.
Internally, Iran is preparing for a prolonged conflict. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Jamenei has appointed hardline military veterans to key security positions, including Mohsen Rezaei as head of the Supreme National Security Council and Hossein Taeb as head of the Basij. Analysts suggest these moves indicate a strategy to sustain a long term confrontation with the U.S. while suppressing domestic dissent caused by a failing economy. Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Pentagon may be shifting its doctrine to give more weight to tactical nuclear weapons due to the wear of conventional arsenals.
Regional instability has further increased with new attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen. Houthi forces used drones to target an Aramco refinery in Jizan, Saudi Arabia, claiming the operation was a response to violations of Yemeni airspace. This follows the collapse of a 2022 truce between the Houthis and the Saudi backed Yemeni government.
