Tensions Rise in Eastern Germany Ahead of Regional Elections

Regional elections are approaching in Sachsen Anhalt on September 6 and Mecklenburg Vorpommern on September 20 amid reports of increasing political instability. In Magdeburgo, approximately 150 businesses owned by migrants closed for five hours on Wednesday to protest against racism and support democracy. The action, supported by the Refugee Council of Sachsen Anhalt, was prompted by fears regarding the AfD's platform of mass deportations and the exclusion of people with migration backgrounds. Recent polls place the AfD as the clear favorite in Sachsen Anhalt with 42 to 43 percent of the vote, followed by the CDU at 22 to 23 percent, The Left at 13 percent, and the SPD at 6 to 7 percent.

Simultaneously, a Forsa survey commissioned by the Körber Stiftung reveals a hostile environment for local officials. In Sachsen Anhalt, 60 percent of mayors report experiencing insults, threats, or physical attacks, while 40 percent of mayors in Mecklenburg Vorpommern report similar experiences. The survey also indicates that 74 percent of mayors in Sachsen Anhalt and 56 percent in Mecklenburg Vorpommern have encountered disinformation. Many officials attribute this shift to growing frustration with federal and state politics and increased polarization. In Mecklenburg Vorpommern, 44 percent of senior administrative staff expect an AfD government to significantly impact municipal structures, while 52 percent of staff in Sachsen Anhalt expect the same.
