Tensions Rise in South China Sea Over Scarborough Shoal Claims

Tensions have escalated in the South China Sea following a series of competing claims and administrative moves regarding Scarborough Shoal, known as Huangyan Dao in China and Democracy Reef in Taiwan. China has issued new management measures for the Huangyan Dao National Nature Reserve, which establish a routine patrol system and prohibit unauthorized fishing, mining, and extraction of corals. These rules, issued by several Chinese agencies including the Coast Guard, are intended to safeguard the ecosystem but are likely to escalate the maritime row with the Philippines.
