Thailand Suspends Gun Licenses Following Deadly School Shooting

Thailand has suspended the issuance of firearms licenses and tightened gun controls after a 14 year old boy killed eight people before committing suicide. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul ordered the interior ministry and police to stop issuing permits to possess, purchase, and carry firearms. The directive includes a re review of pending permits and a suspension of the welfare gun program, which allows public officials to purchase discounted weapons. Government agencies will also inspect gun dealers and shooting ranges while accelerating crackdowns on illegal firearms.

The violence began last Friday in Nonthaburi, north of Bangkok, where the teenager shot and killed the grandparents who raised him using his grandfather's gun. He then proceeded to a secondary school, where he killed six people, including five teachers and staff, before turning the gun on himself. A 12 year old girl wounded in the attack died in the hospital on Saturday. The bodies of the shooter and his grandparents were cremated following Buddhist funeral services.

Investigators are still seeking a motive, though police noted the boy had watched violent videos online and once brought an air gun to school. Officials mentioned he faced academic stress, and a classmate reported he had been bullied. In response, the Ministry of Education announced plans for new safety protocols, including mental health screenings and anti bullying drives.

Thailand has the highest rate of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia.
