At least one person was killed and two others were injured after torrential rains triggered landslides and flooding in South Gyeongsang Province over the weekend. The city of Geoje received more than 800 millimeters of rain from Saturday through Monday morning, while nearby Tongyeong recorded over 670 millimeters. A landslide struck an apartment building in Geoje around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, resulting in the death of one resident. Other landslides struck a house in Geoje and an area in Tongyeong, where one person was rescued. The heavy rainfall caused several streams to overflow, flooding roads and 12 schools and kindergartens. In Geoje, the flooding was severe enough that major employers Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy Industries suspended activities at their shipyards. Emergency alerts were issued to residents, and over 100 people were evacuated from the area. Prime Minister Han Seong-sook and Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung called for all out rescue efforts and the activation of emergency responses. The Korea Herald noted that this deluge followed a period of severe drought in the region.
